at the Gallery... ITERATE | ELABORATE : Leigh Schoenheimer

ITERATE | ELABORATE : Leigh Schoenheimer

26 March to 9 May 2021

Leigh Shoenheimer, Ways of Seeing/Ways of Knowing: Construction #13,
painting, relief and mixed-media sculpture
In this exhibition we see a colourful collision of Schoenheimer’s sculpture and painting practices in a series of works known as the ‘Constructions’. Each work in the series comprises a painted triptych exhibited alongside an abstract sculpture. Faithfully reproduced as a realist painting, each abstract sculpture is then re-interpreted in two other, painted elaborations.

Through the genre of still-life painting, Schoenheimer poses questions about what it is ‘to make pictures’, mining a broad span of stylistic references throughout her work. Schoenheimer’s whimsical use of found objects and pieces of brightly coloured timber toys spark familiarity and joy. Seductive colour harmonies tie her complex works together and are fundamental to providing both a delicious viewing experience and the creation of meaning in Iterate|Elaborate.

The Iterate | Elaborate exhibition was developed by Leigh Schoenheimer in partnership with Onespace Gallery, Brisbane.

Peter Green was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame together with Fleetwood Mac in 1998.  Rolling Stone magazine rates Peter as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time. Directed by award-winning concert director Martyn Atkins (Joni 75, Crossroads Guitar Festival, Cream at the Royal Albert Hall), the cinema event will be preceded by an introduction from Mick Fleetwood. Legendary sound producer Glynn Johns, who produced albums for The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin, will take charge of the audio production.

“The concert is a celebration of those early blues days where we all began, and it’s important to recognise the profound impact Peter and the early Fleetwood Mac had on the world of music.  Peter was my greatest mentor and it gives me such joy to pay tribute to his incredible talent.  I am honoured to be sharing the stage with some of the many artists Peter has inspired over the years and who share my great respect for this remarkable musician.”

On February 25, 2020, mere days before the first case of COVID-19 was discovered in the UK, as the ongoing pandemic necessitated the suspension of modern society, a very special concert took place at the legendary Palladium in London celebrating the songs of Peter Green and the original incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. The audience at that sold out show witnessed something unique at what would be the last live concert anyone would attend until further notice. This show also now takes on a particularly poignant meaning, with the unfortunate passing of Peter Green in July 2020. The players gathered were an all-star cast and all of the musicians present that night had a deep and frequently far-fetched, cosmic connection to the songs. This music had changed their lives, impelled them to play, and for one of them, inspired the formation of their now very famous band. This music has continued to rouse and arouse, and that night, on the verge of an historically dark and sobering moment in human history, it was given a glorious observance.
