IMAGINAGERIE is a portmanteau word that refers to a menagerie that is derived from the imagination.

In senior Visual Art, students have engaged with concepts of transition or change. This has been interpreted as both change in the physical environment, as well as changes that occur to the senses, the consciousness and our concept of reality, inspired by mythology, spirituality and altered states of existence.

Students have also engaged with the concept of personal narratives and storytelling and the influence of history on the present. Many artworks ask questions about the challenges faced in our world on both a personal and global level.

Students have access to a wide range of media. In senior Visual Art students are encouraged to experiment and innovate with materials, resulting in some highly original outcomes. Students are also encouraged to engage with the role of the artist as meaning maker, problem solver and communicator.

The skills learnt in the Visual Art classroom at Blackheath & Thornburgh College are fundamental to life in the 21st century. A systematic approach is used to acquire knowledge and skills, integrating theory with long term, spaced practice and consistent feedback. High expectations and individual learning goals are standard for all students. This structure nourishes student’s complex problem solving skills, critical and creative thinking, visual literacy, cognitive flexibility and self-reflection.

To quote Steve Jobs, “having a vision, and being able to articulate it so people around you can understand it” is a vital skill for 21st century employees. Not only do Visual Art studies nurture the development of human creativity as it emerges, but they can also contribute to building self-reflective and empowered communities. Art gives the learner power to shape their world, to change attitudes and culture, provides a platform for addressing important issues, and by so doing can transform society.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN is thrilled to present one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington.

One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now.
