in the gallery: PETER LAWSON: a Toast to the Towers

  Join us on Saturday 25 June 2022 from 2pm to meet the Artist and view the exhibition

 Artist, Peter Lawson will be showing his tribute to the 150th celebrations with an exhibition titled, A TOAST TO THE TOWERS at The World Theatre from 24 June-14 August 2022.

Lawson will be representing Charters Towers with a three-tier program of paintings. 

1) Past golden days,

2) Recent images of the city the way it appears today 

3) Nature of the country around the region.



Peter will also be painting 'plein air' on Sat 16 July from 9am to 11am at Towers Players Playhouse, Mosman St, and invites people to stop by for a chat to see his talent with painting technique in action.

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Townsville, Queensland in 1946, Peter Lawson studied art by correspondence from 1960-62 and worked as a commercial artist from 1962 to 1970, after which he became a full-time artist. He is principally a painter of Australian outback scenes and historical subjects in oil and watercolour. He has exhibited in Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney and his work was included in the Australian Art Expo in the USA in 1985. He has illustrated several books, including a book of poems by his great uncle, Henry Lawson. He lives and paints on Magnetic Island, off Townsville, Queensland.

Historical event:  
In July 1901 Graham Haygarth is shot dead by David Brown, the manager of the Charters Towers Pyrites works, while chairing a meeting of directors at Bright's Mining Exchange (now vacant Restaurant space).  Brown had received a letter from the company the day before notifying him that his salary was to be reduced from £8 to £6 per week. Brown failed to take his own life immediately after killing Haygarth, and is found guilty after being tried then transported to be hanged in Brisbane.   source www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au/council/charters-towers-history/history-of-our-region

The Short Film:  
This is an idea that was discussed a few times over the years, as visitors were fascinated by the story when they visited The World Theatre.
But after 2 years of covid closures, the inspiration to create a short silent as part of celebrations for Charters Towers 150th year led Friends of the theatre to apply for a RADF grant to employ a professional team to tell the story about this particular dramatic sad event in Charters Towers History.

Queensland Day is an important celebration of our State’s culture and heritage, and an opportunity to reflect on what Queensland means to you and what makes you proud to be a Queenslander - whether it be our people, places, opportunities or lifestyle.

Exhibition: 150 Years: Faces & Places of Charters Towers
Charters Towers Regional Council invites artists to enter their original pieces that encompass the theme ‘Faces & Places of Charters Towers’ at The World Theatre

Exhibition submissions open: 
Monday, 9 May and close: 9am Monday, 30 May.  
The exhibition will be held at The World Theatre from 4 – 18 June.

3pm – 8pm Sunday, 5 June. 2022: Exhibition OPENING will feature as part of Queensland Day. 

A ‘People’s Choice’ prize of $250 will be awarded to the piece which received the most votes during the Queensland Day Celebrations.








Exhibition Entry Details: TERMS & CONDITIONS 
1. Submissions  
  • There are no restrictions based on age, nationality, or training.
  • Artists can submit up to 3 different artworks, of any medium.
  • Person submitting must be the owner and creator of the works submitted and must hold all rights.
  • Submissions must address the subject of Faces & Places of Charters Towers.
  • Subject ‘Faces & Places of Charters Towers’ is open but must be suitable for viewing by children in a public space.
  • By submitting the entry form, the Artist agrees to provide the original artwork chosen to be exhibited in the Gallery.
  • Charters Towers Regional Council (Council) will not be liable for any loss or damage to any artworks submitted.
  • The Artist accepts that all artwork submitted will be on display until the end of the exhibition.
  • If any artwork is sold, commission will be payable – 10% Amateur and 20% Professional. Council will take payment from the client of the artwork and once payment is received, Council will pay the Artist minus the applicable commission on the total sale price.
  • Once registered for the exhibition, all Artists agree that Council may reproduce their artwork (at no fee) for marketing purposes. At no point will Council re-produce prints of any artworks for sale, unless with expressive written acknowledgement from the Artist.
  • Entrants agree to be added to Council’s mailing list for future emails and newsletters but can unsubscribe at any time.

2. Entry Process
  • A maximum of three (3) artworks per Artist may be submitted into the exhibition.
  • Only one image of each artwork is to be submitted, unless 3D object.
  • The image submitted must accurately portray the artwork.
  • The images and the completed entry form must be submitted online, using the submission form on Council’s website by the final deadline. No late entries will be accepted.
  • All information must be supplied including: Artist Name, Artwork Title, medium, dimensions, sale price/not for sale, year created, age of Artist (if under 18yrs/parents name), Artist contact details.
  • Submissions will be reviewed, and successful Artists will be contacted via email to request artwork delivery.
3. Artwork Exhibition Requirements
  • Each wall mounted artwork (including if made of several pieces e.g. diptychs/triptychs) must not exceed a total of 100cm x 100cm (including the frame) and must not project more than 10cm from the wall. A sculpture can be up to 50cm x 50cm x 50cm. Should it exceed this size, the piece may be exhibited in another location.
  • All wall artwork must be ready to install with D rings on the back of the artwork, approx. ¼ of the height of the frame from the top of the frame, at equal locations on each side.
  • If selected, the Artist must arrange for their artwork/s to be delivered on Tuesday, 31 May 2022, and collected from the Gallery on Tuesday, 21 June 2022.
