Historical event:
In July 1901 Graham Haygarth is shot dead by David Brown, the manager of the Charters Towers Pyrites works, while chairing a meeting of directors at Bright's Mining Exchange (now vacant Restaurant space). Brown had received a letter from the company the day before notifying him that his salary was to be reduced from £8 to £6 per week. Brown failed to take his own life immediately after killing Haygarth, and is found guilty after being tried then transported to be hanged in Brisbane. source www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au/council/charters-towers-history/history-of-our-region The Play: "A Shot Fired in Anger" written by Terry Slack
The Short Film:
This is an idea that was discussed a few times over the years, as visitors were fascinated by the story when they visited The World Theatre.
But after 2 years of covid closures, the inspiration to create a short silent as part of celebrations for Charters Towers 150th year led Friends of the theatre to apply for a RADF grant to employ a professional team to tell the story about this particular dramatic sad event in Charters Towers History.
