Gallery: David Wilkinson OUT & ABOUT new paintings MARCH 2023

"Put simply, my art is a means of indulging and unloading my deep love of being out and about in the natural environment. I choose to paint scenes from places I find especially beautiful, atmospheric and awe inspiring.

Painting these scenes makes you study them all the more closely, getting even more out of the experience of being there, and reliving the moment back in the studio. When painting, I am transported back to the place, can soak up the atmosphere of being there again in my mind, and would typically jump at the chance to go back and soak up some more. The ancient age of some of the settings is very much part of the atmosphere which influences what and how I choose to paint.

The feeling of the setting drives how I paint.  On my recent trips around Australia and the North Western Scottish Highlands it was the colour, the heat and the light as well as the geological setting that influenced the paintings in this exhibition."

A bit about David Wilkinson...

David has had a lifelong love of the outdoors from an early age, since being taken into the British countryside by his family on most weekends while growing up. His paintings are chiefly driven by a love of the natural environment and interest in history. His compositions are often evocative of relaxing and pleasant moments or time spent in favourite places. Favourite pastimes include walking, cycling and kayaking. He has a particular interest in wildlife.

Having originally studied geology, David spent some years working in oil & gas exploration before getting an educational re-tread and moving into environmental consulting. From there he moved into environmental management in industry.

David has travelled quite extensively, moving from the UK with his Australian wife to Australia (Vic) in 2009, on to Switzerland in 2012, then back to the UK in 2014 where in 2019 David discovered a passion for painting when he first tried dabbling with oils and acrylics. In 2020 David and his wife returned to Australia where they now live in Townsville, Qld.

David has returned to Australia intent on developing his passion for painting. He is self-taught and continues to learn (a strong artistic flare does also run in the Wilkinson family). He has a strong eye for colour, is fascinated by Australian colours, and how light can influence the feeling of his subjects.

To date David’s work has been displayed in a number of galleries in North Queensland including:
  • Perc Tucker Regional Art Gallery, Townsville
  • Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts, Townsville
  • TYTO Regional Art Gallery, Ingham
  • ‘Art at Jezzine’ Gallery, Townsville
  • Don Roderick Assay Room Gallery, Charters Towers
