"The Charters Towers Performing Arts Festival was formed by a group of dedicated parents who wanted to give the young people of our community a chance to perform and to show The World the results of all their hard work and practice.

Over the years it has grown and evolved into what is now The Charters Towers Eisteddfod. It is held in August every year and attracted over 1500 entries from all across North Queensland who performed in Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts sections, and performed well."

JIM ARENA: "Charters Towers Early Years"

Jim is a local artist, with family in the area going back generations.

A very talented artist who was the local signwriter until he retired, Jim has been refining his painting techniques for quite a long time.

During his years in these trades his work covered many other aspects of the visual advertising industry including airbrushing, murals, pencil, pen and ink and hundreds of T-shirt and tea towel designs.

He has designed numerous book covers and illustrated books for authors from all over Australia. Many of his designs still appear on coins, letterheads, honour boards and in business advertising. He has won State and National awards for his designs and artwork. His work was included in the United Nations General Assembly Exhibition in USA in 1982, and was used in advertising in Portugal, Spain, Bahrain and the USA.

Jim’s great grandparents were among the early pioneering families of Charters Towers owning various businesses and gold mines in the area. His great grandfather was a Councillor for a time and ran his own hairdressing shop.

Jim’s father was born in Charters Towers in 1908 and attended Mount Carmel College.

A great uncle, after returning from the Great War, was a member of the Charters Towers Hospitals Board and made many journeys to outlying medical posts including Collinsville, Ingham and Ayr.

Another uncle was instrumental in the forming of the first Choristers Group in the city. His great aunt owned and ran a boarding house in Hodgkinson Street.

Now Jim paints full time, creating vistas inspired by the early years of Charters Towers, and the surrounding country.
