portrait project charters towers - exhibition open now at The World Theatre Charters Towers

An exciting initiative begun in 2010 by photographer Karen Tenni, participants were selected or nominated from Charters Towers Residents (approx 8,500 in the region) and cover a broad spectrum of professions, ages and cultural backgrounds, providing a diverse study of Australian regional life. With the support of the Regional Art Development Fund (RADF) - a Qld government and Charters Towers Regional Council partnership, the project culminated with an exhibition at the Don Roderick Gallery in October 2011 as celebration of the first part of this project.

Charters Towers is a regional town 130km inland from Townsville in Queensland. Main industries are mining, cattle and education, with a broad range of support services and organisations.

The Charters Towers Portrait Photo Project comprises of digital environmental photographic portraits of significant and interesting residents in the Charters Towers region.

Each participant chose to have their photographic portrait taken in one of three locations (work, home or play); answer a few questions about their life in Charters Towers; and introduced or suggested another resident they think will add significance to the project.

Stage 2 will begin soon... do you know someone who should be immortalised ? Someone who makes a valuable contribution to the community, and is not usually recognised?

If you would like to be part of this project, please contact Karen Tenni on 0409 005 085, OR email karen.tenni@gmail.com OR private message on facebook OR complete the nomination form in the World Theatre gallery.

Karen Beckett is one of the most popular cabaret performers in Australia today. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Karen moved to Sydney in her late teens to pursue a career in entertainment.

Before long she had performed on all major Australian Television variety shows and won a 36-show engagement at the MGM Grande Hotel in Las Vegas. This was followed by national tours with Bob Hope and Neil Sedaka and the release of Karen’s first album, “Romantically Inclined”.

Karen’s sensational voice together with the professional and charming nature of her performances led Bill DeAngelis, Director of Entertainment at the MGM Grande to comment, "I have no doubt the whole world will hear of you Karen”. Her versatility in both cabaret and theatre also landed her the leading role of "Fantine" in an Australian production of "Les Miserables".

Karen has recorded three albums, “Romantically Inclined”, “Here to Eternity” which receives airplay both in Australia and Europe, and her latest CD “When Somebody Loves You” featuring timeless ballads from her cabaret shows.

Karen is currently appearing in Sydney presenting her own production “Songs of Streisand and Friends”; a two-hour show with orchestra, paying tribute to Barbra Streisand and the great female singers of the Twentieth Century.
Karen loves to sing and has entertained audiences all over the world. She weaves her show with fabulous songs and delightful anecdotes from her life. She’ll sing the songs of your life and your memories.
